Loden – Alpine Pants

May 2024

Custom Made – Alpine Pants made of Loden wool ::…
Touring pants for mountaineering for a customer from the Maloja region (Switzerland)

The pants should remain lightweight, have no inner lining, and be easy to repair. Therefore, we chose the robust yet not too thick ‘Loden 435‘ fabric, without doubling the outer fabric except in the crotch area. We also decided not to make back pockets. Two front pockets for small, lightweight items were important, along with a mobile phone pocket on the thigh. All pockets feature zippers, and the lining material used is Etaproof® made from 100% organic cotton. The waistband is also lined with Etaproof®, except for the back which is lined with Loden and slightly raised for warmth. The pants have no belt loops but instead feature a 3 cm wide Velcro closure on the sides. For crampon protection, Cordura in contrasting black was chosen for the hem area. Cordura also lines the hem edge to securely fasten the pants around the lower legs and shoes using two Velcro closures.

Since the customer was very satisfied, they placed an order for a lightweight version for summer. These touring pants were made from ‘Loden 300‘ in sand color. The interior is entirely lined with black Etaproof® biostoff. Cordura in black, similar to the winter pants, was used.

Feedback from my customer:

“The pants have arrived and have already been tested. I am very satisfied. The workmanship is perfect, and the fabrics used work well together. I especially like the ‘light’ construction of the waistband and the use of Etaproof. I am truly very happy. Thank you so much for these wonderful pants. I wanted to ask if you could imagine making the same pants in ‘300 Loden Sand’ as a lighter summer version? Regarding construction, durability, crampon protection, etc. Again, many thanks, and see you next time.”

Summer Version ::…

Said and done, … my customer decided on a summer version. We made it from ‘Loden 300‘ in the color sand mélange. The Loden is undyed; the color comes just from the selection of the wool. This time, the inner lining was made entirely with Etaproof® 200 organic cotton fabric. The reinforcements are again made from black Cordura. The leg width of the summer version is slightly narrower at the hem since it is mainly used with mountain boots. However, crampon protection remained an important detail.

Feedback from my customer:

“You’ve outdone yourself this time. The pants are amazing. I also really like the light, natural fabric. Wearing them is very comfortable, and I can hardly wait to try them out. The workmanship is once again perfect, and the attention to detail is evident. The fit is also perfect. Thank you so much for these fantastic pants. As soon as I can, I’ll send you some photos of them in action. Regarding making it a series model, I’ll leave that decision to you. But of course, I’m happy to own a unique pair of pants.”

Feedback No. 2 from my customer:

“I am still very happy with the pants and was able to test them extensively this summer. It’s really amazing how comfortable they are to wear, even when it’s a bit warmer. In wind and cold, they keep me nice and warm, and sweat isn’t absorbed enough to make the pants truly wet. The only issue is in heavy rain—initially, they’re great, but once they get really soaked, they become heavy and bulky. However, they still stay warm on the inside.”
